December 2007--LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://lo-clc.org

We have had a great year. Thank you to all our presenters, instructors, special interest group leaders, the Wednesday Lab helpers. MARK MATSON for updating our PC equipment and doing many things to keep us going. WARREN BRUNE for setting up our schedule of classes and all that is involved. Also, to PAUL SLEEPER who updates and maintains the MAC equipment. ELAINE DICKSON for starting our fundraiser social time. BRENDA SUTEU for offering us the opportunity to sell cinnamon rolls at the Farmers Market. Funds from this gave us enough money to upgrade our MAC equipment. And thank you, all you faithful friends and volunteers who attend our Monday morning Computer Users Group.

LAKE OSWEGO UNSUNG HERO: This year BOB GUYAN has been chosen as an Unsung Hero for 2007. He has set up and worked on the database of volunteers at the Lake Oswego Library as well as setting up our CLC database, which is used in sending out information to members of the User Group. He has been an instructor in many classes on digital photography and is a co-leader of the digital photography group that meets the third Monday at 12:30 p.m. We have many great volunteers. Who will be nominated next year?

The DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP cancelled meetings in November and December.

The INVESTMENT GROUP will meet on Friday, November 30th with a program on FOUR WAYS TO CUT TAXES. The program will teach you how to take advantage of tax breaks before they are gone. The group meets at 10:00 a.m. in the Computer Learning Center and everyone is invited.

On November 5th TODD FEINMAN of the Lake Oswego Library presented THE INVISIBLE WEB, Part 3. He opened the door for us to find a greater assortment of knowledge. Watch for the next presentation by TODD

VETERANS DAY was November 12th. The Center was closed for the holiday.

HOLIDAY PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS was our topic on November 19th, presented by REBECCA FORBES. Some suggestions: Take group shots early in the event. Try close-ups. Take several shots and avoid busy background. Some fun shot are candid shots of people getting into position. Flash works for about eight to ten feet on digital. To improve appearance, ask people to lean forward and raise their chins. Too bad if you missed this one; it was a good session, many more ideas were presented.

QUESTION and ANSWER on November 26th was hosted by BOB GUYAN and WALLY HELM. The meeting started with a short movie on the Rubik’s Cube. BOB worked through a question of sending information back to your home computer when you are away from home. One suggestion was to send yourself an e-mail. Discussed programs available as LogMeIn.com free. Need for passwords on many of these programs. Some software mentioned, Keepass and Roboform, both free. You should come to these QUESTION and ANSWER sessions with your questions and learn from other people’s questions. We enjoyed food at our Social today, which was provided by ELAINE DICKSON and DAR YOUNG.

November 2007--LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://lo-clc.org

Have you been reading the TIP OF THE WEEK on the above web site? Even though MARY LOU SOLID is now in California, she has been providing us with new tips every week. You may also review the tips that are in archives.

I again got a notice that all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and we will be receiving sales calls. We will be charged for these calls. To prevent this, we must call 888-382-1222 from our cell phone. It is a National Do Not Call list. This one call will block your number for five years. It is sponsored by the Federal Trade Commission. Pass this information on.

On October 1st, RICHARD STEINGRABER presented the fifth and last part of THE MACHINE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD series. It has been very informative and gave the history of how the computer came to be.

REBECCA FORBES presented TRAVELING WITH A DIGITAL CAMERA on October 8th. Some tips:

  • Check your camera before you leave on your trip.
  • Read the manual that came with camera.
  • Pack enough media cards, extra batteries, battery charger, and manual.
  • Burn a CD at a camera store to back up your media card.
  • Take lots of shots—look twice and shoot once.
  • Best time is early morning, late afternoon, shade or clouds for best shots.
  • For best shots, stand with one foot in front of the other, hold camera still against face, elbows next to body.
  • Pay attention to background, what is behind heads.
  • Take shots from different directions, different angles, with or without flash.
  • Get close, then closer.
  • Take pictures of signs as an introduction to your pictures for location.
  • Tell stories about your trip.
  • Send pictures home by e-mail.
  • She recommends using the Picasa 2 software.
  • This can be downloaded free from Google. There is a plug-in available to make Picasa work with your MAC.

The October 15th program was MORE MAC—COMPARING THE MAC AND THE PC presented by PAUL SLEEPER, head of our MAC special interest group which meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month at 12:30. All MAC users invited. Our Computer Learning Center has installed the new MAC MINI on all MAC equipment. PAUL demonstrated what it could do. There are many shortcuts on this machine. Come to the group and learn.

MARK MATSON on October 22nd presented the program Lotus Symphony a new free Word Processor, Spreadsheet and Presentation program.

On October 29th the QUESTION AND ANSWER session was hosted by BOB GUYAN. He showed a slide show made up of pictures he had taken of the Computer Learning Center in the past. If you want to see cartoons about computer users, ED CAMPBELL has compiled twelve pages of them. Go to ed-r-Campbell@comcast.net. We had a discussion about JOTT and SKYPE. If you were at this session, you would know what these are for. All our sessions are worthwhile for PC and MAC users.

We want to thank BERYL DAHL and RENEE SLOAN for their contributions to the Coffeecake Social today. Profits reached $53 for our treasury and we all had fun. ELAINE DICKSON is looking for volunteers for the Coffeecake Mondays (last Monday of the month). You may contact ELAINE at Dickson.Elaine@hotmail.com or RENEE at renee97035@phreego.com to report your preferred date to provide goodies in 2008.

The Computer Learning Center will be open on July 2nd. See below for the program to be presented. It should be good.

I am sorry to report that VICTORIA SHORT BAUM has officially resigned as Chair of our Advisory Board. She is now working in a paid position for the American Red Cross, which takes, up most of her time. We thank her for the many hours she donated to our Computer Learning Center. We have enjoyed the web page that she set up for us and the many hours teaching and advising us. We have many volunteers to thank for our growth to where we are today. VICTORIA gave us many volunteer hours. That makes VINCE TYLMAN officially Chair of our Advisory Board.

MARK MATSON has been putting many hours working on our equipment—updating--so we can have Windows XP and VISTA on most of our PC’s. We hope to be able to update the MAC equipment soon.

Flash is good only 8 to 10 feet from your subject.

On June 18th DICK STEINGRABER presented Part 2 of THE MACHINE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD—Mouckly and Eckert –an OPB documentary. This has been very interesting seeing how the computer progressed from its beginning to now. There will be another part each month for the next few months. Check the program schedule.

Dick Steingraber, on May 14th, presented THE MACHINE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD, Part 1 GIANT BRAINS, an OPB documentary. This was the first of a series of five presentations on how the computer came to be. You will want to see the remainder of the series; next presentation will be June 18th.

You will be able to download a program to see shortcomings of hardware for XP and VISTA. All PC machines in the Center will have both XP and VISTA installed by the city and Mark. We want to thank him on his generosity of time for the Computer Learning Center. Without our wonderful volunteers, the Computer Learning Center would not be able to support all we do.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY SIG on May 21st, John Sanders presented a program explaining digital photo terms.

  • PIXEL Geek for PIXEL ELEMENT. This is the physical item that is recorded as an image on the camera sensor.
  • MEGAPIXELS--1 Million Pixels—a measurement of capacity or size of a file of pixels.
  • RESOLUTION--An expression of how close the pixels are to each other; the closer they are together, the greater the detail possible and the higher the resolution.
  • ISO Stands for INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS ORGANIZATION, and refers to the sensitivity of the camera sensor to light. ISO is to digital what ASA is to film. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive to light and the less light is needed to make a good exposure.
  • UPLOAD AND DOWNLOAD Terms relating to moving data from the web to computers. Download comes from the web, and Upload, goes on line. Terms are also used to describe moving data from camera to computer and computer to CD or DVD.
  • JPEG Stands for JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP. It is the most common format for cameras balance between compression and quality.
  • TIFF Stands for TOTAL IMAGE FILE FORMAT and is a high quality format that takes more space on the computer, but has no compression or loss of quality.
  • RAW This is the highest quality format and requires LOTS of space. Usually not available on point and shoot cameras.
  • COMPOSITION Process of capturing light, putting it in a frame and arranging the elements to a pleasing photograph.

May 2007--LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://lo-clc.org

We are through with our Federal taxes for another year. It was nice to have the computer help and helpers to complete the forms. Dick Steingraber was the instigator for this project.

Have you volunteered to bring coffeecake for the last Monday of the month social? You can show off your culinary ability for the group. Let Renee Sloan know which month you would like to do this. She can be reached at renee97035@phreego.com.

On April 4th Mikal Anderson presented a program on The Global Net: Site Internationalization, Localization, Automatic Translation Systems. Mikal headed up the Pan-Asian Hosting initiative for Princeton Review Asian franchises. In this position he designed and implemented a unified web content management system that spanned six Asian countries, used five language pairs (Traditional Chinese-English, Simplified Chinese-English, Thai-English, Korean-English, Japanese-English) and supported product sets tailored to each local market. He spent 15 years in Tokyo, Japan. He showed us how the computer can be set up to write not only in English, but other languages with symbols, very complicated, but doable.

Dick Steingraber, on April 9th, continued the progress of the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which will open in three months. The old 1950 bridge will be upgraded for earthquake safety, retrofitted, and will reopen in one year. This project will cost about $849,000,000. Tolls will be charged to help pay for it. His son has been on this job from 2001 to date. Magnificent engineering; computers involved. There have been no deaths to date, because they use extreme safety precautions.

Tips Review was the subject on April 16th presented by Mary Lou Solid with Bob Eick at the computer (audio-visual specialist). Go to the above website (http://lo-clc.org ) and you can read other tips by going to Archives. We also celebrated Wally Helm’s birthday. His wife brought in a beautiful cake for us all to share.

Here are the tips she selected:

March 5, 2007. Ever try to delete multiple entries at the same time in your favorites list in Internet Explorer (IE)? Can’t be done. Instead, do it through the Favorites folder in Windows Explorer (as opposed to IE). It's under Documents and Settings, inside a folder bearing name of the user. The icon for the folder is a star. Then delete like any other files with the control or shift keys.

February 26, 2007. Promotions Company CMS INC. reports that roughly 697 million Internet coupons were printed in 2006. Amazingly, only 6.2 million were redeemed. That's a huge pile of wasted paper. If you want to see what bargains you're missing, check out coupons.com, coolsavings.com and valpak.com.

January 22, 2007. If budgeting programs like Quicken are too complicated for your needs, try Microsoft’s Money Essentials. This is a stripped-down version of Money and is designed to track income and expenses against a budget in a simplified format. It can be purchased and downloaded from Microsoft.com/money for at last count $20.

January 15, 2007. If you are using the new IE7 browser, you won’t see the old familiar icons which are turned off by default in the new version. Revert to the previous version by going to Tools in upper right and click on Menu Bar. You can also customize the new setup by going to Tools>Toolbar>Customize. Add or remove from the lists of icons shown.

December 4, 2006. If you are thinking of buying a new computer with Windows Vista installed, you will need to think about transferring files on your current PC to the new one. A product called Detto Intellimover has been around for a while for just this task. But check when you are ready to see if it will work with Vista. And as always with brand new technology, good luck

November 13, 2006. One of life’s more annoying moments is reading email with tiny text. To increase size of the text hold down Control and move scroll wheel on the mouse toward you. If you do not have a scroll wheel, you need a new mouse

May 15, 2006. There are many photo sharing programs out there but a new one from Smilebox.com is worth checking out. It emphasizes design and use of ease. The basic version is free, but includes ads. It’s still in beta launching officially June 1 and promises 190 designs by then. One reviewer was impressed with its jazzy formats for everything from scrapbooks to postcards.

April 23, 2006. Browsing on 100-downloads.com is like finding things at Wal-Mart you never knew you needed. The site purportedly lists the 100 most popular free software downloads covering photo, security, audio and video plus Skype, Google Talk (beta), MSN Search Toolbar and preview version of IE 7. It’s fun to see what’s out there even if you don’t do the download. Yes, you do need to find dead links in your bookmarks because there is a program for that too.

On April 23rd, Mikal Anderson enlarged upon the subject of April 2nd.

Questions & Answers was the topic of our April 30th session. It was a fun session. Mary Lou Solid was back as host. Many good questions were answered. It was decided that you can have good results by having your ink cartridges refilled instead of buying new ones. Saves you money. If you bought a new laptop, you should charge the battery (may take up to seven hours) then let it run down to nothing, and charge it again. If using your laptop on an airplane, you may find surges. Some people leave their laptops on all the time. Some disconnect the Internet access.

Dick Steingraber announced that he has a 1993 OPB documentary on the start of computers. In 1950, in our race to get to the moon, the government spent money developing equipment for space travel. This will be shown in five segments, one a month. The first one will be May 14th.

We want to thank Wally and Marilyn Helm, Ken Handel and Bob Brown for the coffeecake served today. It was delicious.

Mark Matson announced that the PCs have been upgraded with the city donating flat screen monitors. All the PCs will have VISTA and WINDOWS-XP. Hard drives, memory and graphics cards will be updated. We were given a laser printer. Four of the old monitors were kept to be used when the MAC equipment is upgraded soon.

There will be a presentation on VISTA operating system in July.

The MAC SIG group met on April 12th and 26th. You can now download the free .Picasa for Mac software (http://picasa.google.com/download/mac ) Bob Guyan showed us how to install Picasa Web Albums Exporter for iPhoto by following these steps:

  1. Close all open iPhoto windows and make sure it is not running.
  2. Double click PICASA WEB ALBUMS IPHOTO PLUG-IN PKG from the disk image you downloaded. This will open the Installer. When the Installer finishes, you are ready to use the Exporter in iPhoto.

This is similar to iPhoto, purchased by google, free albums to share. Bob explained what you can do with this software. You can use their storage for 4,000 photos with each account.

There was discussion of Mozilla Firefox.

We have two faithful volunteer leaders to help you enjoy your MAC computers, learning new things and overcoming some problems you may be having. Come and share with us on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 12:30.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY SIG group met on April 16th. One important thing brought up is that you should make a backup copy of your photos and give it to your children so that you will have it if you ever have a fire in your home. We discussed photosharing, CD, DVD, hard drive, external hard drive, Irfanview.

This group has been reorganized. Several new programs will be investigated in the future. Come and bring your questions and be ready to learn new techniques.

INVESTMENT SIG group: Because of the updating of our computers on April 27th, the meeting was rescheduled to May 4th at 10:00 a.m. Dave Park will review Fisher Investments 2007 Stock Market Outlook. Everyone is invited.

Febuary 2007--LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://lo-clc.org

Well, I think we have had enough winter for this year. If you want more snow, Mt. Hood is nearby. I am looking forward to the sunshine this week. What a glorious feeling in the sun. It gives new energy to seek new things, especially in the computer world. Have you looked over the classes being offered? How about the TIPS OF THE WEEK at the above web site? We have a great group and much to offer you. Come and join us for our Users Group every Monday at 9:30 a.m. You almost always learn something new or something that you have forgotten.

We did not meet on January 1st or 15th because they were holidays. On January 8th, Dick Steingraber did part one of TURBO TAX and part two on January 22nd. He took us through most of the items with good explanation on what to do. He showed us how if something were changed, the software would follow through and change the whole report as needed. The software would automatically carry over the information on the IRS form into the Oregon State form. Every year the forms change. You should retain a printed copy for your files and keep the software.

January 31st was a QUESTION AND ANSWER session hosted by Mary Lou Lord, her last session. She has turned this project over to Bob Guyan and Wally Helm. Thank you Mary Lou for being host for quite a while, we enjoyed your knowledge and humor. Question today was WHAT FOOD NEVER SPOILS? The answer was HONEY.
Prize today was a seat on the campaign trail of Hillary Clinton.

Thank Dar Young and Esther Wood for providing the treats for the Social before the Q&A session--enjoyed by all.

We discussed what donation money is used for new software, ink for the printers, paper and supplies, our Christmas party; updating the MAC equipment--the city only updates the PC equipment which we share with them in their staff training program on some Fridays. In 2006 we had to replace the bulb for the overhead projector, which cost about $500. The ACC Foundation is hiring a person to do fundraising. All donations to the LOACC are still tax deductible. If you make a donation, you can specify that it comes to the Computer Learning Center.

The new MS Vista operating system for the PC will be in stores this week. It is different from XP and you may need some training for it. There will be a new MAC operating system out soon. You may download Open Office until March. See above web site under Resources for information on this system.

INVESTMENT SIG The January 26th meeting was rescheduled to Friday, February 2nd at 10:00 a.m. Mary Lou Solid will present INVESTING FOR INCOME, FIXED, FLUID AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. Look over the class schedule to see if there is something you have been waiting for in a class. If you have not found it, why don't you let Warren Brune know what it is and he will see that it is offered in the near future

HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS and a JOYOUS, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.

KAY KERR, your editor
