DECEMBER 2006--LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://lo-clc.org
We are starting the month of December with a white coat maybe. This is an early snowfall that November has brought. Early ski season for winter enthusiasts. The broken highway #35 is supposed to be useable by December 15th.
The next TUNE UP class will be on December 13th at 10: 00 a.m. -- PC TROUBLESHOOTING. Check the LEISURE NEWS and the CLC web site above for new PC and MAC classes. Also, read the TIP OF THE WEEK for some good advice.
A note from Ken Handel (keh@hevanet.com: Hi everyone! Another great month! We received $55.75 from our Bake Sale on November 27th and $26 from the Dollar Jar collection this month! Much credit goes to Elaine Dickson and Warren Brune for their cake contributions and to the generosity of our outstanding CLC group.
Speaking of Elaine, it was great to see her at the meeting and to hear first-hand how her treatments were progressing. She is an inspiration to all!
I had reason to write Jerry Trageser the first week of November and was told that he had an impending defibrillator installation. Today I heard from him with the results. He reported the installation had no complications, and that he spent Thanksgiving with all the family. Great news from Pennsylvania!
Jerry and Vivian Trageser, 111 Merlin Drive, Hummelstown, PA 17056

e-mail address: ggtpa29@verizon.net
The October 30th bake sale, donated by Beryl and Victor Dahl, netted $75.30 and October Dollar Jar totaled $21.00. Victor and Beryl Dahl also made a $100 contribution to CLC, very generous, thank you.
We are looking for more generous folks, men or women, to bake coffeecake for our social on the last Monday of each month. Let Renee (RENEE97035@PHREEGO.COM) know which month you prefer. Sign-up sheet is available at CLC.
On November 6th, Bob Eick presented DOWNLOADING AND USING FREE WEB PROGRAMS, Part 1 (open office, film developing and printing, etc.) I was unable to attend but I am certain that it was well done and very informative. He will continue this presentation on December 11th.
GENEALOGY by Cherill Vencil, L. O. Librarian, on November 13th was about Genetic Genealogy using DNA testing. Some DNA testing company links:
There are more
The companies that support surname, ethnic, and geographic projects are:
- DNA HERITAGE
- Family Tree DNA
- Relative Genetics
Cherill Vencil invites anyone interested in genealogy to join the group at the Library, which meets on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. For information, call 503-636-7628 or e-mail to Cherillc@ci.oswego.or.us
On November 20th, Dick Steingraber did a program on MAIL MERGE. He showed us how to get out our holiday mailings (cards, party invitations, etc.) simply using this method.
The QUESTION & ANSWER session on November 27th was very good. You always learn something from other people's questions.
A note was received in early October that all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and we will start to receive sales calls which we will be charged for. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone 1-888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It only takes a minute of your time to block your number for five years. Pass this on or go to http://www.donotcall.gov/

There are many photo sharing programs out there but a new one from Smilebox.com is worth checking out. It emphasizes design and use of ease. The basic version is free, but includes ads. It’s still in beta launching officially June 1 and promises 190 designs by then. One reviewer was impressed with its jazzy formats for everything from scrapbooks to postcards.

The weather was great the beginning of May, but we have really been drenched lately. Maybe that will mean that June will be dry for us, we hope. I love that sunshine and my lawn needs mowing again. I am a gardener and am sad that the flowering shrubs did not have a chance to bloom very long this spring. Of course, the rain gave us an excuse to play inside on our computers.
We are looking for volunteers to staff the COMPUTER LEARNING CENTER booth at the Lake Oswego Saturday Farmers’ Market. Let Mary Lou know if you would like to help, mare1013.@Comcast.net

MAY 2006—LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://lo-clc.org
I can’t believe that it is May already. Where did the last four months go—they flew by so quickly and now we are going to enjoy some good weather at last. We have some good programs scheduled and we hope that you will ignore the sunshine for a few hours on Monday mornings and join us in learning what more you can do with that machine that is sitting on your desk, table or lap. Look over our class schedule and remember the Wednesday Mini Tune-Up’s. I took the April 12th mini and learned a few things that I had forgotten and some new things too. On May 10th the subject will be MS WORD TIPS. These run from 10:00 to 11:30 and cost $6.00 for members of ACC. Sign up early to assure your spot.
The Computer Learning Center Users’ Group on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00 is for all computer users, both PC and MAC users. Many of the presentations are relevant and can be applied to either type of computers. So, now the MAC group will be called a Special Interest Group and has been organized differently. We have a new leader and hope all MAC people will join us on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 12:30 and make this a great learning tool. If you have a problem or question about your MAC, if possible, please e-mail Peter Rohrs at prohrs@easystreet.com before the meeting to give him time to procure an answer. If not, bring it to the meeting and people will help you with it.
On April 3rd, Bob Timm did an outstanding job of showing us what is possible with VIDEO EDITING. You can learn some of this in the Photoprocessing Group that meets on the 2nd Monday at 12:30 p.m.
MORE GENEALOGY presented by Cherill Vencil of the Lake Oswego Library was our program on April 10th. A handout, ROOTSWEB: A FREE RESOURCE WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD by Matthew Porter was discussed. Rootsweb homepage: www.rootsweb.com More information available on http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/ The Lake Oswego Library has a GENEALOGY INTEREST GROUP that meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. For information, call 503-636-7628 or 503-675-2540 or e-mail www.lakeoswegolibrary.org.
On April 17th Mary Lou Solid and Bob Eick, at the computer, did a “TIPS REVIEW”. There are over 300 tips archived in the CLC web page http://lo-clc.org Many are keyboard shortcuts, photography tips (5-8-05 conserving the battery). You should review them and put some in your Favorites folder.
The last Monday brought our DR. IS IN—time for individuals to present a problem they are having for help. Also, at 9:00 a.m., we had our coffeecake and coffee social period before the QUESTION & ANSWER session hosted by Mary Lou Solid. To keep these socials going, we need volunteers to help set up and clean up. They say it is not a real problem except getting here early. We seniors do like our sleep. The Q & A session is always good. Many problems are solved and we all learn something that we forgot or did not know.
The MAC Special Interest Group met on April 13th and much discussion on e-mail and photos on the computer were answered by Peter Rohrs and Paul Sleeper. A book that was recommended for use with your MAC is GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR MAC & MAC OS X TIGER by Scott Kelby ($19.95). It is an easy reference book.
The April 27th session was a good. There are many smart MAC users in this group who are always willing to help and to learn a little more. We hope that the MAC users who were with us when we first started this group will return and give us another try.
There will be a RESIDENTIAL COMPUTER & TV RECYCLING EVENT on Saturday, May 13th, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Clackamas County’s Sunnybrook Service Center, 9101 S. E. Volunteers Needed: We are looking for volunteers to teach MSN and AOL to inexperienced users. See the Volunteers page for more info.
Users' Group Documentation: Remember to check the Users’ Group Archive for documentation on previous Users’ Group Presentations. Material is presented or linked if it was provided by the speaker. For example, Bob Guyan provided written documentation to supplement his Picasa presentation in November. You can go directly to the text by clicking on Picasa Documentation, or check out the Users’ Group archive for other links as well.
Jerry Trageser has a new address: ggtpa29@verizon.net Did you see the Christmas card that he sent? He wants to know how we are doing.
PC USERS’ GROUP:
- We had no meeting on January 2nd because it was a holiday, observing New Year’s Day.
- January 9th brought us Turbo Tax, Part 1 – Income, presented by Dick Steingraber. He showed us how it leads you through the related topics step by step. If you use this software from year to year, information can be brought forward to the new year. Other people in the group have used this and agree that it is good software program.
- On January 9th, we had a great New Year’s party after the Users’ Group which was very well attended. Lots of good food and comradeship. Didn’t see some of you, but then we can’t be everywhere all the time. We want to thank Renee Sloan and Elaine Dixon for hosting it.
- Center was closed January 16th for Martin Luther King holiday.
- January 23rd, Dick Steinbraber presented Turbo Tax Part II – Deductions. He showed us how the software inserts information in the Federal and State forms as it is entered. His presentation was a fictitious married couple filing jointly. The software includes forms for one state, if you work in Oregon, it will be the Oregon State Tax. If you work and live in another state, you will need one for that state also.Much information needed is available in the software, i.e., value of Goodwill donations, etc. He thinks the software is easy to follow and accurate.
- The Question & Answer Session on January 30th will be hosted by Bob Guyan. This is always good. If you have a problem, the host or someone attending will usually work you through it.
IMAC USERS’ GROUP:
- Some IMAC users joined us for the New Year’s party on January 9th. It was a good chance to get acquainted with other computer users.
- On January 12th, John Sanders presented a program on iPhoto and iMovie. He started the program with several slide shows that he had done using this software. Then he proceeded to set up one for us explaining step by step what he was doing. Top put music in his show, he used iMusic. We are advised to save steps taken frequently so that you do not lose them.
- January 25th the group has been invited to visit the Bridgeport Apple Store at 2:00 p.m. for the “Getting Started Workshop.”
- On January 26th, Todd Feinman, Lake Oswego Reference Librarian did a presentation on “Searching the Internet.” He advises us to use words that would have the information you are looking for. Some of the most popular search engines are:
To keep this group going, we need a group of volunteers to help set up programs, etc. Great ideas do not survive if they are reliant on one or two people to carry the load. We have stumbled and survived and have come a long way, but we are still struggling. We need your support.
IMAC classes are going well. Paul Sleeper has volunteered to be an additional instructor.Look at the schedule of classes on our web site http://lo-clc.org and see if something is for you.

Another year, another chance to improve your computer skills. Have you looked over the class schedule to see if there is something you have been waiting for in a class? If you have not found it, why don’t you let Warren Brune know what it is and he will see that it is offered in the near future. Our Monday Minis, Tuesday Tune-ups and Wednesday workshops did not go over very well. We will take a respite and offer them again later. I thought they were a good idea, but not many others did.

But the main party was postponed until January 9th and it will be a New Year’s Party.
- No session on December 26th because of the Christmas holiday.

This was a good session, well attended.
