NOVEMBER 2004--LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS' GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://www.lo-clc.org
The Computer Center is working on a MAC Users’ Group. We have compiled a short list of MAC users from our classes in the past. If you know of anyone who might be interested in joining this group, please notify us. It will work on the same principles of the PC Users’ Group. You will have a source to bring your questions and problems for help in solving them. The first group will be Friday, NOVEMBER 5th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Lake Oswego Computer Learning Center in the lower level of the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center. E-mail will be sent to those whose e-mail addresses we have. This will be a get acquainted session.
Walter Bell stated: “The purpose of the MAC Users’ Group would be to promote MAC computing, exchange ideas, review new software and hardware, and to invite our members to do presentations to the group on a topic of mutual benefit and choice.
“An additional benefit would be to promote our MAC instructional program through the development of a cadre of instructors, the procurement of new equipment, and the acceptance of donated equipment which the MAC Users’ Group could either use or sell.
“We could also plan other activities such as visiting the various MAC Stores to find out about new software and hardware, repair and maintenance of equipment, and sources for the purchase of new, used and refurbished equipment both locally and online.
“We could invite speakers for various computing topics, visit or join the Portland MAC Users” Group, and any other activity of interest to the MAC Users’ Group.
“When you contact MAC members, it would be very helpful if you got not only their telephone number but their E-MAIL ADDRESS as well and send that information to Walter Bell at wbell5@comcast.net or Carol Higgins at cahigg2@netscape.net.”
PC USERS’ GROUP--On October 4th, the program was “DEALING WITH SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH YOUR COMPUTER” presented by Victoria Short Baum. She showed us how to delete unwanted programs that were installed when you purchased your computer. You may go to http://www.lo-clc.org , click Resources for further information.
On October 11th, the program was “WHAT TO CONSIDER IN BUYING A DIGITAL CAMERA” presented by Bob Guyan. This too you can get from the http://www.lo-clc.org by going to Resources and Digital Cameras. OCTOBER 2004-LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER http://www.lo-clc.org
We were closed September 6th for Labor Day holiday.
On September 13th, Ann Flore’s presentation was SECURITY ON THE WEB. If you were unable to attend this group meeting, a copy of the handout is available by going to www.sophos.com/spaminfo/bestpractice/phishing.html. Phishing is an increasingly common type of spam that can lead to theft of your personal details such as credit card numbers or online banking passwords. It attacks work by the scam artist sending “spoofed” emails that appear to come from a legitimate website that you have online dealings with such as a bank, credit card company or ISP—any site which requires users to have a personal identity or account. The email may ask you to reply with your account details in order to “update security” or for some other reason. It may send you to another website for purpose of stealing your personal information.
Never respond to emails that request personal or personal financial information. It is also important for users with a broadband connection to install a firewall.
On September 20th, STYLES & TEMPLATES IN MS WORD was presented by Richard Steingraber. Computers have a NORMAL template and style set up in them. He showed us how to modify a document template and change styles. Go to MS WORD and click HELP. Type in TEMPLATE or STYLES and follow the directions. The content of existing documents is not affected by changes you make to the templates they are based on. Word will update modified styles when you open an existing document ONLY if the AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE DOCUMENT STYLES option is turned on. NOTE; Set this option before you open an existing document by clicking TEMPLATES AND ADD-INS on the TOOLS menu.
GETTING HELP FROM THE MS WORD HELP MENU:
Just click MICROSOFT WORD HELP on the HELP menu. To type a question in the HELP window, click the ANSWER WIZARD tab. To scroll through a table of contents for help, click the CONTENTS tab. When you want to search for specific words or phrases, click the INDEX tab.
The HELP in MS WORD will give you directions to
Create a document template
Modify a document template
Apply a different style
Apply the styles from another template by using the Style Gallery
Use settings from another document or template
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS was the topic for September 27th. Mary Lou Solid did an excellent job with help from the group in answering most of the questions. This is always a good session because we all learn from each other’s questions.

If you are sending e-mail from another city that is not your home base, be sure to ask for a local phone number or you will be charged long distance toll from your home base. There may be an 800 number you can use.
In the August Newsletter, I noted that MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP Home Edition is available for $16.00 and WINDOWS 98 for $10.00. These are books, not the software package. These are excellent books with concise, visual, step-by-step instructions for handling all the tasks you’ll need to accomplish.
On August 2nd, Bob Eick presented a program on EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT YAHOO. He suggested that you set up a second account for miscellaneous newsletters you receive. This will save space in your regular e-mail address. When sending e-mail to a group, put your own address first and all others as blind copies (BCC). That way you are not exposing all e-mail addresses. Also, if forwarding e-mail that you have received, copy and paste only the body of the mail onto the new one. Do not copy the previous addresses to whom it had been sent previously.
Vince Tylman presented INTERFACING YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA WITH YOUR COMPUTER on August 9th. Classes are held in the Computer Learning Center so you can learn to do this also. Check the web page (http://www.lo-clc.org ).
On August 16th Todd Feinman presented LIBRARY’S NEW WEBSITE AND DATABASES. Now you can renew books, CD’s, Videos and periodicals on line. You can also request a special book to be put on hold for you. Also, a library card can be issued to you, which you will have to pick up in person and identify yourself. The library is connected to www.ConsumerSearch.com so you can get product reviews and reports by Consumer Search. Also www.Google.com has internet archives, Wayback Machine has old articles available. www.webopedia.com is also available.
There were no Users’ Group meetings on August 23rd or 30th.

There was no Users’ Group on July 5th because of Independence Day. Hope you had a chance to enjoy some fireworks.
On July 12th, Herman D’Hooge of Intel Corporation was the featured speaker. USER CENTER DESIGN was his topic. He is an innovative strategist leading Intel’s User Centered Design Group and has worked at changing the way employees do business by changing their working environment. Removing the cubical environment, he has set the stage for products of the future. It is nice to know what is in store for us. We hope to have more speakers from Intel.
Donlan Jones presented HINTS FOR TRAVEL & A MATHEMATICAL APPLICATION OF EXCEL on July 19th. Some of the good web sites he used were:
Warning—if you make a reservation for hotel or flight, it is usually non-refundable. Shop around first.
For flight information, go to www.portlandairportpdx.com. You can use www.flytecomm.com/webtrax to display accurate flight status information, real-time aircraft position, departure and destination points, aircraft type, altitude, speed, departure time, and estimated time of arrival.
The mathematical problem: Consider a square with unit sides. Now draw a circle with radius R and center coincident with the center of the square. What value of R will minimize the area included in either the square or the circle, but not common to both? The answer: 0.171573653 square meters. Is that what you got? He used Excel.
July 26th was a QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION presented by Mary Lou Solid. Many questions were asked about firewalls, browsers, web mail, problems with e-mail. Before changing your e-mail internet provider, you need to notify the people in your address book/list by sending them a message with your new e-mail address. You should also send a message to your own new e-mail address.
The Computer Learning Center is selling several copies of MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP Home Edition ($16.00), also one for WINDOWS 98 ($10.00). See Warren or Jerry.
Our booth at the Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market has been doing well with many people stopping by. We are still looking for several more volunteers to work in the booth. Dates available are 7/31, 8/21, 8/28, 9/18, 9/25 and 10/2. Two people are needed in the morning (9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) and two in the afternoon (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). JULY 2004—LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER USERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER
LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTERhttp://www.lo-clc.org
On June 7th Ed Srebnik presented a good program on the USE OF POWER POINT FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS. This is a nice way to have a slide show for your family, etc. You have to download READER, which is free from Microsoft to be able to show your Power Point. If enough people would like to take a class on this, one will be scheduled. Ed recommended this book: HOW TO DO EVERYTHING IN POWER POINT by Ellen Finkelstein Osborne. It costs $24.99, but if you go to Borders Book Store, tell them you are with us and they will give you a 20% discount. There is one in Lake Grove near the I-5 Freeway.
Jerry Trageser led a QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION on June 14th. Many good questions were introduced. You should not miss these sessions because they are usually very informative. Every question provides benefit to everyone. The Center has some computers for sale. If you are in the market for one, check with Jerry. Again, we are asked what presentations you would like to hear. Send an e-mail to the CLC Webmaster. Also, if you like to be a presenter, let us know.
On June 21st, Karl Hoffmann was not available, so, we talked about viruses. Jerry Trageser chaired the session. It was recommended that you have your virus protection program on an automatic check-up. Many of the virus scares end up as a hoax. Check Victoria’s input on our Web Page.
June 28th BASIC INTERNET SECURITY—Viruses, Firewalls and pests was presented by Victoria Short Baum. Most of what she covered can be found on the CLC Web Site: http://www.lo-clc.org. Look under Resources and Security. There is some free software that can be downloaded, such as Adaware from Lavasoft. Also, a free Windows Firewall, such as Zone Alarm. She recommended that you always install new updates to your computer programs.

We will need two people in the morning (9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) and two people in the afternoon (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). One of each group will have ability to run the Power Point Program showing activity in the CLC. This will let people in Lake Oswego know what we are doing in our Computer Learning Center. There is a sign-up sheet at the Center.
In the June newsletter, we had a problem with the margins and the credit for presenting on May 17th INSIDE YOUR COMPUTER was somewhat eliminated. I wanted to give credit to Wally Helm and Mary Lou Solid who did an excellent job.
Be sure to check our Web Page or the bulletin board for new classes. If you do not find what your are looking for, let us know. HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE INDEPENDENCE DAY.

www.Altavista.com -- Best at seeking out hard to find facts and figures.
There are many more but no room here to print them. You should have attended this meeting.
We had a good demonstration of what is INSIDE YOUR COMPUTER presented by Wally Helm and Mary Lou Solid on May 17th. We were shown what was inside the box and how it is put together. They also warned us not to play with the power area.

Jerry Trageser did a good presentation of Turbo Tax on February 2nd. Several people there had also used it before and were happy with it. The deluxe version has an audio included in the explanation of the software, which takes you through the steps. In the basic version you have to read the directions yourself. They said it is also quite full proof in helping you through the steps.
On February 9th Bob Eick led a Question and Answer session. These are always good because we all learn from the questions. He gave us keyboard shortcuts and I am including them in this newsletter:
If your hands are already on the keyboard, sometimes it's easier to use keyboard shortcuts than it is reaching for the mouse. You may want to print this as a handy reference. I have done this, and then made up a *cheat-sheet* of the ones I use to have handy until I learn them, or use a High-Liter on this printout. Bob (¤.¤)~~/

A few have had accidents and have painted their hands as they learned, but have kept on and are satisfied doing it. FRYs has supplies.

With the new year, the snow came. I hope you all had an easy time of it. We live on a cul-de-sac, which was not plowed, so we had to wait for the rain to wash the ice away. If it were not for the computer, I would have had cabin fever. Fortunately, our electricity was on during the storm.
Steve Anderson really made an interesting presentation at the January 5th Users' Group Meeting. He did a good job researching LINUX and several of the attendees were new faces who also knew something of LINUX.
January 12th was a presentation on "Investments" by Evelyn Metzger. Some of her favorite sites are
REITs, NAREIT.COM, Yahoo Finance, Google search, Fool.com, Dogs of the Dow, Quantumonline.com, Morningstar.com, Investor.Reuters.com, Hoovers.com This brought up an idea of the Computer Center having an Investors' User Information Group. No money will be involved, just discussions on the market. If you are interested, come to their first meeting on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and share your experiences of using the computer for investing. Quantumonline.com is a source of information aimed at fixed income investments. It will give you backgrounds on companies. There is no cost to register.
Martin Luther King holiday was January 19th, so there was no Users' Group Meeting.
On January 26th, Richard Beckwith of Intel gave us an explanation on "Wireless Networking," how it started and what its future might be. There is no end to what this might do. Mr. Beckwith is a psychologist and has been working on how people are using technology. He told us that next year or the year after, everything that communicates will also compute and everything that computes will also communicate. There is a small radio in computers of the future.

FROM A NOTE RECEIVED, I GIVE YOU:
"I am passing this on to you because it has definitely worked for me...
And at this time of year we all could use a little...calm!!! By following the simple advice I read in an article, I have finally found inner peace...the article read:
"The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you've started."
So I looked around the house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished....and before coming to work this morning I finished off a bottle of red wine, a bottle of white, the Bailey's, Kahlua and Tia Maria, my Prozac, some valium, my cigarettes and a box of chocolates. You have no idea how freakin good I feel....
You may pass this on to those you feel are in need of Inner Peace..."
And with that, WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE NEXT USERS' GROUP MEETING.

JANUARY 2004 NEWSLETTER
from the LAKE OSWEGO COMPUTER LEARNING CENTER USERS' GROUP
of the LAKE OSWEGO ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER
If you haven't been coming to the User's Group meetings, you have missed some good programs. December 1st was a Question & Answer session by JERRY TRAGESER. We learned that there is a place called FREE GEEK at 1731 SE 10th Avenue in Portland, OR (503-232-9350) where you may pick up used hardware, parts and connectors, etc. for your computer at cheaper prices. They will also take your old computers for recycling--may charge you $10. You may call first to see if they have what you are looking for. Also discussed buying a Dell product which is now at a reduced rate. Be aware that you might want other software and components that are not included in the sale price which will run the cost up.
WARREN BRUNE was awarded a LAKE OSWEGO UNSUNG HERO AWARD for 2003. This was well deserved and we are proud that the city acknowledged him.
On December 8th, BILL MacKENZIE, Communications Manager of INTEL informed us of a great future for INTEL in Oregon. It is one of their major campuses and they look forward to more expansion here. Founded in 1968. Investment in Oregon is $9,000,000. They have plants all over the world which helps sell their product. The trend now is more laptops. It is Oregon's largest employer--14,500 employees--located near Hillsboro on 460 acres. In Oregon, everything that Intel does, is done here.
On December 15th, TERESA O'HALLORAN talked about QUARK EXPRESS 6.0 (QuarkXPress) which she uses in her work here at Center in composing the LEISURE NEWS. We had a great business meeting following the User's Group.
There was no program scheduled for December 22nd because it is too close to Christmas. The December 29th Group meeting will be a Question & Answer Session.
You have received a copy of the new 2004 class schedule, for you to ponder and decide which classes you would like to enter or assist with. If there is something you would like a class in or a subject you would like covered in the User's Group sessions, let us know. Also, we are always looking for volunteers to teach or assist with a class. By assisting, you learn some of the things you forgot.
The Adult Center is also looking for volunteers to help with their many fun chores that you may be capable of helping with. Drop by and see how you can fit in as a volunteer. Or, sign up for programs offered.
Don't forget about our Computer User's Group on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. and the Supervised Lab on Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. for students and former students.
If you are having problems with something, don't forget that you can bring your problems to the Questions & Answers sessions. There is usually someone here who can work you through your problem. We all learn from all questions. If you have a digital camera, you might want to join the group which meets the third Monday here from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. This is a special interest group that is free.
January User's Group sessions will be:
January 5 "Operations System" presented by Steve Anderson
January 12 "Investments" presented by Evelyn Metzger
January 19 CENTER CLOSED--Martin Luther King Holiday ("Wireless Network" presented by Richard Beckwith is being rescheduled.)
January 26 "Questions and Answers)
MAKE IT A 2004 RESOLUTION TO COME TO THE USER'S GROUP ON MONDAYS. SEE YOU THERE. KAY KERR, Editor.
